Tore Nyberg, fil. dr. and senior lecturer at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, celebrated his seventieth birthday on 4 January 2001. For that occasion a group of his colleagues and former pupils paid homage to Tore Nyberg with a festschrift. For more than thirty years he has inspired students and colleagues with his vast knowledge and enthusiasm. His is of course a household name in Birgittine studies, but he has made valuable contributions within a number of other fields: the introduction and growth of Christianity in Scandinavia; the integration of Scandinavia and the Baltic Region in the cultural sphere of the Latin West - always with an eye to relations with and influences from the East; urban history and monasticism in general. Within all these field he has mastered both the detailed study and the comprehensive synthesis.
With the contributions to the festschrift we wish to reflect this wide range of Tore Nyberg's scholarship and his many international contacts.
